Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • Attention please. You have to check all the boxes. If you leave this box or more boxes unchecked you can't submit your article.
  • The submission has not been previously published in English, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or LaTeX document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided. The URLs are not hyperlinked.
  • The text employs italics, rather than underlining (URL addresses are not hyperlinked).
  • Illustrations and pictures will be sent in separately and are not placed inside the text.
    The appropriate place of the illustrations and pictures is clearly indicated within the text.
    Illustrations and pictures are high-resolution (at least 300ppi at printable size) JPEG or TIFF files.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which you can find here.
  • If submitting to the peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring Anonymous Review have been followed.
  • If the submission is sent to the Articles Section, the Fresh Section, or the Arts & Artists Section, an abstract has been added.
  • If the submission is for a special issue, the title of this special issue is mentioned below under "Comments for the Editor".
  • The journal does not have article submission costs.
  • The journal does not have article processing costs.

Author Guidelines

If you intend to submit a manuscript please make sure that your account is labelled as “author”. (If it is not, you will not be able to upload submissions). Standardly you will be registered as a reader, but for submitting an article you need to be registered as author too.

 

Ensuring anonymous Peer Review

To ensure the integrity of the anonymous peer-review for submission to this journal, every effort should be made to prevent the identities of the authors and reviewers from being known to each other. This involves the authors, editors, and reviewers (who upload documents as part of their review) checking to see if the following steps have been taken with regard to the text and the file properties:

  1. The authors of the document have deleted their names from the text, with "Author" and year used in the references and footnotes, instead of the authors' name, article title, etc.

  2. With Microsoft Office documents, author identification should also be removed from the properties for the file.

    For Microsoft 2003 and previous versions, and Macintosh versions of Word:

    • Under the File menu select: Save As > Tools (or Options with a Mac) > Security > Remove personal information from file properties on save > Save.

    For MacIntosh Word 2008 (and future versions)

    1. Under the File menu select "Properties."
    2. Under the Summary tab remove all of the identifying information from all of the fields.
    3. Save the File.

    For Microsoft 2007 (Windows):

    1. Click on the office button in the upper-left hand corner of the office application
    2. Select "Prepare" from the menu options.
    3. Select "Properties" for the "Prepare" menu options.
    4. Delete all of the information in the document property fields that appear under the main menu options.
    5. Save the document and close the document property field section.

    For Microsoft 2010 (Windows):

    1. Under the File menu select "Prepare for sharing."
    2. Click on the "Check for issues" icon.
    3. click on "inspect document" icon.
    4. Uncheck all of the checkboxes except "Document Properties and Personal information".
    5. Run the document inspector, which will then do a search of the document properties and indicated if any document property fields contain any information.
    6. If the document inspector finds that some of the document properties contain information it will notify you and give you the option to "Remove all," which you will click to remove the document properties and personal information from the document. 

 

Format

Articles and reviews should be submitted online in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or LaTeX document file format.

 

Length

Contributions to the Articles Section should not normally exceed 7,500 words (including bibliography). An abstract should be added of no more than 175 words.
Contributions to the Fresh Section should not normally exceed 3,500 words (including bibliography). An abstract should be added of no more than 150 words.
Contributions to the Arts & Artists Section should not normally exceed 3000 words. An abstract should be added of no more than 150 words.
Contributions to the Review Section should not normally exceed 2000 words.

 

General Style Guidelines

Articles must be written in clear, grammatical English. Aesthetic Investigations cannot provide any assistance with translating or language editing. Submissions in poor English will be rejected.
The text employs italics, rather than underlining (do not hyperlink URL addresses).
A space should be left between paragraphs, which should not be indented.
Book and journal titles should be italicized while article titles should be in quotation marks.
Quotation marks should be single quotes, except for quotes within quotes (which should be double).
Quotations longer than thirty words should be separated from the main text, indented, single-spaced and should have no quotation marks.
Foreign-language quotations in both text and notes should be translated into English, unless the significance of the quotation will be lost. The original text may be included in a note if it is unpublished, difficult to access, or of special relevance to the article. Brackets in quoted material indicate author's interpolation.
Brackets within brackets should be square (Painting as an Art [1988]).
Diacritics (accents) should be added to all names or words where appropriate.

 

Notes

Notes should be used for material or comments that are either not absolutely necessary to the flow of the argument or which give information that a general, academic reader may not reasonably be supposed to have. Notes are also used for referencing sources.

Notes should be placed between straight brackets in the main text, and without numbers. Please do not use the functionality for footnotes or endnotes of your wordpocessor.[This is a note]

 

Bibliography

Articles should have a separate bibliography. The bibliography should be uploaded as a separate file in the bibtex format according to the following examples:

For the article

To make your bibliography in the bibtex format it is easy to use the BIBTEX EDITOR

Entries for Articles: "Volume", "Number" and "Pages" are not marked as required fields, but you should fill in these fields.
Entries for Books: "Volume" and "Address" are not marked as required fields, but you should fill in these fields.

After filling in the fields of each entry, click the "Generate"-button. This will automatically generate the key.
Go to the next item of your bibliography by clicking "New Entry”, and selecting the kind.

When all entries are added, click "Export" under "File". Then mark the entries you want to export and hit the Export-button. 

Copy the result, paste it in a Word file, and your bibliography in bibtex format is ready to be sent as a separate file with your submission.

 

Illustrations

Illustrations and pictures must be sent in separately and not be placed inside the text. Clearly indicate within the text the appropriate place of the illustrations and pictures.
Illustrations and pictures must be high-resolution (at least 300 ppi [300 dpi] at printable size) JPEG or TIFF files to be usable.
It is the author's responsibility to obtain permissions and to pay all reproduction fees.
Please begin acquiring images and clearing rights as soon as your article has been accepted. Delays affect the print schedules, and images will be dropped if permissions are not secured on time.

 

Abbreviations

f. - following page
ff. - following pages
e.g. - for example (no comma necessary)
i.e. - namely (no comma necessary)
cf. - compare

Please do not use ibid. - always give the full in-text reference.
Please do not use etc.

 

Fresh, Arts & Artists and Book Reviews

The contributions to the Fresh, and Arts & Artists Sections and to the Review Section are not reviewed anonymously by peers and so should include your name.

Arts & Artists

The Arts & Artists section welcomes contributions from artists and art critics expanding on philosophical aspects of works of art. Contributions normally do not exceed 3000 words, and include a 100 words abstract. This section will not be peer-reviewed.
Arts & Artists may be edited by guest editors.

Fresh

For Fresh we welcome contributions that offer fresh insights to open up new or old avenues of thought within or without the academic debates. Contributions do not normally exceed 3500 words, and are accompanied by an abstract of max. 100 words. This section is not peer reviewed.
